Adhesion Modifier Project for Network Rail

Delivery: 2013-2015

Vossloh Kiepe UK has been working with Network Rail to roll out an innovative trial of fitting Adhesion Treatment Utilising Service Trains (ATUST). Three classes of vehicle have been installed so far; Mk3 DVT, Class 317 and Class 323, which are capable of laying a friction modifier gel, which allows the rail head to be treated during the leaf fall season, without deploying the Network Rail yellow vehicles.

The system requires the installation of an underframe tank which contains the friction modifier and an electric pump and hoses to apply the gel to the rail head. The control of the system is managed through a bespoke microprocessor controller, which evaluates vehicle speed, location and system status to control the flow of gel to the rail, which can be controlled through back office software.
